Session 6

The Wheel Gets Re-Invented at Your Expense

Thinking, designing and building the same thing multiple times rather than re-using a proven solution takes more time and energy. However sensible this wisdom may be, things aren’t working that way under the typical corporate IT engagement model.

Now, knowing that speed is not a priority for corporate IT teams, it becomes easy to understand how quasi-similar —or boldly identical— technology components are being built and rebuilt at your expense. But there’s more.

You will learn:

• That Cross-industry standardization is very weak in many areas and why what exists doesn’t help much.
• That there are little incentives in place for not reinventing the wheel.
• That incentives in place are rather encouraging this behavior.
• A few ruthless questions about how re-use is managed.
